Many arguments are made for and against same-sex marriage that end with divisiveness and confusion instead of thoughtful conversation. New York Times –bestselling author Dr. Preston Sprinkle provides a resource that will encourage respectful and thoughtful conversations around the question “Does the Bible support same-sex marriage?”

I had heard of Preston Sprinkle only a few times before this past month but did not know about his extensive work with the LGBTQ community until then. Once I had heard about this book about a month before it was released, I dove right into Preston’s podcast “Theology in the Raw” which covers more than just LGBTQ topics, though it does have a heavy focus on that. Preston, along with his guests, have some really good things to say about this issue (for lack of a better term– sorry, Preston) and I was very interested in his latest book, Does the Bible Support Same-Sex Marriage?

The book is broken down into 23 sections, 21 of them focusing on 21 different arguments for same-sex marriage and Preston’s points of agreements and then points od disagreement. From the title, one would think that all of the arguments that are discussed would be about same-sex marriage itself, but this isn’t quite the case. In fact, a lot of the arguments Preston addresses are not about same-sex marriage but same-sex sex. Thankfully, he does get to some of these toward the end and that is pretty compelling. This is not to say that the other “discussions” aren’t interesting– they most certainly are. Be aware, however, that some of them can get a little technical and you might find yourself skimming over a few bits.

Overall, this is a solid book that I would recommend to those who might be on the fence about same-sex marriage/sex or those who might want to be better equipped to discuss some of these arguments that they might come across in favor of them.

I am looking forward to reading more of Preston’s books and listening to more of his podcast to go even deeper into his work and thoughts about the LGBTQ community and how the church can be better when it comes to loving them like Christ loves them.
